Do You Need f/2.8, or Do You Need 105?
A trinity hangtag is the wrong first question. f/2.8 through 70, or f/4 through 105, is the range you work. Then shop Gavler's live ranking.
A trinity hangtag is not a range. An f/2.8 badge, a 24-70 chart, and a wedding aisle in perfect noon light are how retailers sell the category. Architecture first: a 24-70 that holds f/2.8, an f/4 zoom that actually reaches 105 or 120, or the one Canon barrel that refuses to drop below f/2.8 through 105mm.
Get that split wrong and you own a $2,999 Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z you asked to live in a sling — or a $1,096 Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S you curse because the job was a dark ceremony at 70mm.
The live ranking is on our Best Standard Zoom Lenses list. Use this page to pick a lane, then buy from that list. The cluster write-up is The Best Camera Lenses in 2026.
Buy a 24-70 f/2.8 if this is the workhorse
Twenty-four to seventy at f/2.8 is a wide, a normal, and a short tele in one barrel. You are buying speed and a working day, not 105mm you will not unpack.
The benchmark is the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II: 695 g (about 200 g lighter than the original GM), four XD linear motors, 11-blade aperture, 82mm filter. About $2,298. Currently first at 9.7 — 40 of 264 votes, the most on the roster. Amateur Photographer called it the best-quality general-purpose zoom for E-mount to date. Cameralabs said the Mark I softened as you zoomed in; the II stays crisp, corners included, even at f/2.8. Buy it when 24mm, corner hold, and AF that keeps up with an A9 III burst are the brief. Skip it if $899 and 28mm are the honest start. That is the Tamron.
The Canon you can hold in the dark is the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM: 900 g, 5-stop optical IS, Nano USM, L weather sealing. About $2,399. Currently second at 9.5. It is the only 24-70 f/2.8 in this class with in-lens stabilization. The-Digital-Picture measured better low-light stills than the EF predecessor. Buy it when handheld event work on an R5 or R5 Mark II is the week. Skip it as a studio tripod lens you asked IS to justify. Sigma undercuts it if RF third-party glass is why you opened the tab.
The Nikon S-line 24-70 is the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S: 805 g, OLED top panel, customizable control ring, 82mm filter. About $2,397. Currently third at 9.3. Photography Life ranks it among the sharpest midrange zooms it has tested. Amateur Photographer called it the best Z-mount zoom it has laid hands on. Buy it for Z8 and Z9 weddings and editorial. Skip it if you want an internal-zoom barrel or a lighter travel kit — that is the 24-120 f/4 S. The front extends more than an inch from 24 to 70mm, and wide-open bite at 70mm is the soft spot.
The value 24-70 is the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art: 735 g on E-mount, HLA autofocus, 11 blades, E-mount and L-mount. About $1,199. Currently fourth at 9.2. Digital Camera World said the center scores would impress on a prime. Dustin Abbott measured roughly 90 percent of the GM II at about half the price, with fast, well-damped pulls and little focus breathing. Buy it when the print matters more than the hangtag. Skip it if the cleanest uncorrected geometry is the brief — Abbott flagged more distortion and vignette than the GM II or the Tamron.
The L-mount first-party 24-70 is the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f/2.8: 935 g, Leica-certified, weather-sealed to -10°C, 11-blade bokeh. About $2,197. Currently tenth at 8.2. The Phoblographer found it sharp edge to edge. Digital Camera World said the files are no better than the half-price Sigma and that body-plus-lens is almost 2 kg. Buy it if first-party sealing on L-mount is the product. Skip it as a value play. That is the Sigma on the same mount.
Do not buy the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II hoping 70mm becomes a 105 you left at the hotel.
Buy f/4 if 105mm or 120mm is the extra stop you will use
An f/4 travel zoom is reach and a lighter strap. You are buying 35 to 50 extra millimeters, not a failed f/2.8.
The Sony walkaround is the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS: 663 g, Optical SteadyShot, constant f/4, 77mm filter. About $1,398. Currently seventh at 8.7. DxOMark rated its sharpness among the best 24-105s it has tested. Amateur Photographer called it relatively light and solid. Buy it when one G-series barrel covers a trip and you want OSS in the lens. Skip it if f/2.8 at 70mm was the whole ask. PetaPixel already named the barrel-to-pincushion distortion. DxOMark also said it is good, and not exactly inexpensive for an f/4.
The Z-system travel zoom is the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S: 630 g, 24-120mm, often under $1,100. About $1,096. Currently eighth at 8.6. Photography Life called it one of the best all-around midrange zooms it has ever tested. Dustin Abbott found AF fast, quiet, and smooth — and noted it is one of the cheapest S-line zooms on the street. Buy it on a Z6, Z7, or Z8. Skip it on a Z50, Z30, or Zfc: there is no in-lens VR, and Photography Life called that the biggest spec issue. The barrel distortion is complex; correct it and the edges can pinch.
An f/4 hangtag does not put a stop of ceremony light on the file. Do not buy the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S hoping 120mm becomes a 24-70 you can shoot at f/2.8.
Buy the 24-105 f/2.8 if one barrel has to refuse the fork
Canon is the only maker on this list that held f/2.8 from 24 to 105. You are buying a 24-70 and a short tele in one hybrid barrel. You are not buying a travel zoom.
That lens is the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z: about 1,330 g, Dual Nano USM, internal zoom, 5.5-stop optical IS rising to 8 with coordinated IBIS, power-zoom adapters for video. About $2,999. Currently sixth at 8.9. Dustin Abbott saw exceptional center and mid-frame sharpness. The Phoblographer called it perhaps the sharpest zoom Canon has made — and a piece of hardware you will not want on your shoulder for a really long period of time. Buy it when stills, video, and 105mm at f/2.8 are one job. Skip it if you rarely need past 70mm. Skip it as a hike. The uncorrected barrel distortion is massive; lateral CA at 105mm is strong.
Do not buy the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z hoping 1,330 g becomes a 663 g G-series travel zoom.
Buy 28-75 if 24mm is not the job
Twenty-eight is wide enough for portraits, events, street, and most travel. It is not a hotel lobby or a tight interior.
The value start is the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2: 540 g, VXD autofocus, 0.18 m close focus at the wide end, 67mm filter. About $899. Currently fifth at 9.0. Dustin Abbott called it a professional-grade lens in basically every detail. SLRLounge said 28mm reaches prime-lens sharpness. You give up 24mm and the last bit of extreme-corner bite versus the GM II. Buy it when $1,400 leftover is another lens. Skip it if architecture and interiors are why you opened a 24-70 tab.
A 28mm hangtag does not put 24mm on a vestibule. Do not buy the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 hoping the wide end becomes a 24mm you did not pay for.
Buy APS-C if the body is Fuji
Sixteen to fifty-five on X-mount is a 24-84mm-equivalent f/2.8. You are buying a smaller bag, not a failed full-frame trinity.
That zoom is the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II: 410 g (down from 655 g), linear-motor AF, weather seals, 72mm filter. About $1,199. Currently ninth at 8.4. Digital Camera World was really impressed that the Mark II is smaller, lighter, and sharper than the original. PetaPixel put the diet at 245 g. Fstoppers found AF tracking seamless. Buy it for documentary and events on an X-T5 or X-H2. Skip it if in-lens OIS or close-up reach was the whole brief — there is still no optical stabilization, and PetaPixel said it will not win close-up awards. Native barrel and pincushion are pronounced; the camera corrects them.
Do not buy the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II hoping 410 g becomes a 24-70 you can mount on an A7R V.
f/2.8 is the day — f/4 is the extra millimeters
f/2.8 you leave on the body: Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM, Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S.
f/2.8 you buy for the print, not the badge: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2.
f/2.8 through 105mm you will feel in the strap: Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z.
f/4 you pack for a week: Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS, Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S.
APS-C f/2.8 you can actually carry: Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II.
L-mount first-party that the Sigma keeps honest: Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f/2.8.
A stop of light does not put 35mm of zoom on a 24-70. Do not buy the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM hoping 70mm becomes a 24-105 you left at home.
Stabilization is in the barrel or in the body — pick one story
The only 24-70 f/2.8 with optical IS: Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM. Coordinated 8-stop hybrid: Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z.
OSS in an f/4 travel zoom: Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS.
IBIS does the work: Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2, Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S, Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II, Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f/2.8.
Do not buy the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S hoping missing VR becomes a Z50 you have not upgraded.
Mount is a decade of glass — not a reason to switch for a stop
Sony E: Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS, plus the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art and Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2.
Canon RF: Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM, Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z.
Nikon Z: Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S, Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S.
Fuji X: Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II.
L-mount: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art, Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f/2.8.
Sensor first, then this glass. That split is the mirrorless camera buying guide, then Best Mirrorless Cameras. Do not buy a $4,299 Canon EOS R5 Mark II hoping the kit zoom becomes the RF 24-70L IS.
This list is not a portrait prime, a 70-200, or a new body
A face at a known distance is 50 vs 85 vs 135 in the portrait-lens buying guide, then Best Portrait Lenses. Reach for sports and wildlife is 70-200 vs 500–600 in the telephoto-zoom buying guide, then Best Telephoto Zoom Lenses. Street, astro, and environmental width is 35 vs 24 vs 20 in the wide-angle buying guide, then Best Wide-Angle Prime Lenses. The cluster write-up is The Best Camera Lenses in 2026.
Light you put the zoom under is strobe vs LED in the photography-lighting buying guide, then Best Photography Lighting. A body sticker is format first in the mirrorless camera buying guide, then The Best Mirrorless Cameras in 2026.
A helmet or a handlebar is not a 24-70. That form-factor split is the action-camera buying guide.
Browse the rest of Photography when the standard zoom is one tool in the bag.
Do not buy a $2,298 Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II to fix a body you have not matched to the work.

Common Questions
Buy a 24-70mm f/2.8 if low light, subject isolation, and a wedding or editorial day are the job: the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II (695 g, about $2,298, currently first at 9.7), the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM (900 g, about $2,399, currently second at 9.5), the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S (805 g, about $2,397, currently third at 9.3), the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art (735 g, about $1,199, currently fourth at 9.2), or the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f/2.8 (935 g, about $2,197, currently tenth at 8.2). Buy an f/4 travel zoom if 105mm or 120mm is the extra stop you will actually use: the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS (663 g, about $1,398, currently seventh at 8.7) or the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S (630 g, about $1,096, currently eighth at 8.6). Buy Canon's RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z (about 1,330 g, about $2,999, currently sixth at 8.9) if one barrel has to hold f/2.8 through 105mm for stills and video. Range first. An f/2.8 hangtag does not put 105mm on a 70mm barrel, and an f/4 travel zoom does not become a GM II because the listing said trinity.
For most working Sony photographers who want one 24-70 they will leave on the body, the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II — 695 g, four XD linear motors, about $2,298. It currently leads Best Standard Zoom Lenses at 9.7, with 40 of 264 votes. Canon handheld IS: RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS. Nikon S-line 24-70: Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S. Value 24-70: Sigma 24-70 DG DN II Art. 28mm-start value: Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2. Hybrid 24-105 f/2.8: Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS Z. Travel f/4: Sony 24-105 G OSS or Nikon Z 24-120 f/4 S. Fuji APS-C: XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II. L-mount first-party: Panasonic S Pro 24-70. Confirm the live community ranking before you buy — votes move. The cluster write-up is The Best Camera Lenses in 2026.
Buy f/2.8 if you shoot available light, isolate a subject at 70mm, or work a ceremony without bouncing a flash: Sony FE 24-70 GM II (about $2,298), Canon RF 24-70L IS (about $2,399), Nikon Z 24-70 S (about $2,397), Sigma 24-70 Art II (about $1,199), Tamron 28-75 G2 (about $899), Fuji XF 16-55 II (about $1,199), or Panasonic S Pro 24-70 (about $2,197). Buy f/4 if the extra reach is the product and IBIS or OSS will hold the shutter: Sony FE 24-105 G OSS (about $1,398) or Nikon Z 24-120 f/4 S (about $1,096). Buy the one lens that refuses the fork — Canon RF 24-105 f/2.8L IS Z at about $2,999 — if you will carry 1.3 kg to keep f/2.8 through 105mm. A stop of light does not put 35mm of extra zoom on a 24-70. Do not buy f/2.8 hoping 70mm becomes a 105 you packed out of the bag.
Buy the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II at about $2,298 if 24mm, corner hold at f/2.8, and 120fps-class AF are the brief — currently first at 9.7, 695 g. Buy the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art at about $1,199 if Dustin Abbott's roughly 90 percent of the GM at half the price is the trade you want — currently fourth at 9.2, 735 g, E-mount and L-mount; expect more distortion and vignette than the GM II. Buy the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 at about $899 if 28mm is wide enough and 540 g is the carry — currently fifth at 9.0. You give up 24mm interiors and the last bit of extreme-corner bite. Do not buy the GM II hoping $2,298 becomes a Tamron you forget you paid for, and do not buy the Tamron hoping 28mm becomes a 24mm hotel lobby.
Buy the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S at about $1,096 if one S-line barrel from 24 to 120 is the trip — 630 g, currently eighth at 8.6. Photography Life called it one of the best all-around midrange zooms it has tested. It has no in-lens VR, so pair it with IBIS (Z6, Z7, Z8 class), not a Z50 or Zfc. Buy the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS at about $1,398 if you want OSS in the barrel — 663 g, currently seventh at 8.7. DxOMark rated its sharpness among the best 24-105s it has tested. On Fuji, the travel 24-70 is the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II at 410 g, about $1,199 — 24-84mm equivalent, no OIS. Do not buy the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS Z hoping 1,330 g becomes a sling-bag 24-105.
Buy it if one RF barrel has to replace a 24-70 and a short tele for hybrid stills and video — constant f/2.8 through 105mm, Dual Nano USM, up to 8 stops of coordinated IS, about $2,999, currently sixth at 8.9. The Phoblographer called it perhaps the sharpest zoom Canon has made, and also said you will not want it on your shoulder for a really long period of time. Dustin Abbott needed a +44 barrel-distortion correction. Skip it if you rarely need past 70mm — that is the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS at about $2,399, currently second at 9.5. Skip it as a travel 24-105. That job is an f/4 you can carry. Do not buy 1.3 kg hoping it becomes a 663 g Sony 24-105.
Buy in-lens IS if you shoot Canon handheld in low light or want coordinated IS on an R5-class body: the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS (5 stops optical, about $2,399) is the only 24-70 f/2.8 in this class with IS, and the RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS Z adds up to 8 stops coordinated. Buy OSS in the barrel on Sony if the travel zoom is f/4: the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS. Buy IBIS-only if the body already has it: Sony FE 24-70 GM II, Nikon Z 24-70 S, Sigma 24-70 Art II, Tamron 28-75 G2, Nikon Z 24-120 f/4 S, Fuji XF 16-55 II, Panasonic S Pro 24-70. Photography Life called missing VR the 24-120's biggest spec issue on IBIS-less Nikon crop bodies. Do not buy a 900 g Canon 24-70 hoping 5-stop IS becomes a 695 g GM II you forget is mounted.
Buy the zoom if the day is a ceremony, a trip, or a walk you will not re-lens. Buy the prime if the job is a face at a known distance. Sensor first — full-frame vs APS-C vs Micro Four Thirds — lives in the mirrorless camera buying guide, then Best Mirrorless Cameras. Distance first — 50 vs 85 vs 135 — lives in the portrait-lens buying guide, then Best Portrait Lenses. A $2,298 GM II does not put 85mm rendering on a guest's face. A $1,798 Sony 85mm GM II does not put 24mm on a hotel lobby. Body-only plus one zoom you will shoot for a decade beats a hangtag you asked a kit f/5.6 to justify. Do not buy an R5 Mark II hoping the box zoom becomes the RF 24-70L IS, and do not buy the Tamron hoping 28-75 becomes a Plena.
