Filament Appliance, Resin Vat, or a $199 Kit?
A 500 mm/s hangtag is the wrong first question. Enclosed FDM vs heated-chamber vs resin vat vs a $199 kit comes first. Then shop Gavler's live ranking.
A 500 mm/s sticker is not a printer. A 500 mm/s banner, a 16-color hero reel, and a lifestyle shot of a perfect benchy on a sunny desk are how retailers sell the category. Architecture first: an enclosed FDM appliance you treat like a microwave, a heated-chamber or dual-nozzle machine that makes tools, a resin vat that needs gloves — or a $199 kit you will still square.
Get that split wrong and you own a $3,499 Formlabs Form 4 you asked to print PETG brackets — or a $199 Creality Ender 3 V3 SE you curse because the job was a 9K miniature.
The live ranking is on our Best 3D Printers list. Use this page to pick a lane, then buy from that list. The community ranking story is in The Best 3D Printers in 2026.
Buy an enclosed FDM appliance if you want filament that just works
Enclosed FDM is a CoreXY box, a heated bed, and a door. You are buying PLA through ABS without a draft. You are not buying a wash station.
The default is the Bambu Lab P2S: DynaSense servo (70 percent more force than the P1S stepper), Active Airflow so PLA can run with the door shut, 256×256×256 mm, 500 mm/s, 20,000 mm/s², 300°C nozzle, AMS 2 Pro with drying, 1080p AI camera. About $599. Currently first at 9.7 — 42 of the list's votes, the most on the roster. How-To Geek called it the step up from an A1. Hackster.io timed unbox-to-print at 15 minutes. Buy it when the printer should disappear until the part is done. Skip it if you needed a 350 mm tool or a 65°C chamber — that is the H2S.
The open-source tank is the Prusa Core One: all-steel exoskeleton, nothing welded, Nextruder, active chamber to 55°C (or under 30°C for PLA), 250×220×270 mm, Wi-Fi plus Ethernet, firmware you can read. About $1,299 on the live list; kit nearer $949. Currently second at 9.6. Tom's Hardware still frames it as the complete enclosed prosumer. Buy it when you will still own this machine in five years. Skip it if $599 and a 15-minute app are the whole decision — that is the P2S.
The hobbyist default is the Bambu Lab P1S: enclosed CoreXY, 256 mm cube, 500 mm/s, AMS, 300°C, no servo, no 5-inch panel. About $399. Currently third at 9.5. AppleInsider called it as easy as the hobby gets. Tom's Hardware put print quality next to the old X1 Carbon. Buy it when PLA and PETG are 90 percent of the shelf. Skip it if CF and TPU at speed were why you opened the P2S.
Do not buy the Bambu Lab P2S hoping 500 mm/s becomes a Form 4 surface.
Buy heated-chamber or dual-nozzle if the part is a tool
Production FDM is chamber heat, a hardened path, or a second nozzle. You are buying a fixture, not a benchy.
The engineering chamber is the Bambu Lab H2S: active 65°C, 350×320×325 mm, 320°C nozzle, 110°C bed, hardened gears, PA-CF / PET-CF / PPS-CF as a supported workflow. About $1,249. Currently fourth at 9.4. All3DP called the chamber the feature that separates it from every other Bambu. Buy it when carbon fiber is on the shelf. Skip it if you print PLA — the P2S is the same quality at half the receipt.
The dual-nozzle machine is the Bambu Lab H2D: two physical nozzles, 320×320×325 mm, 350°C, up to four AMS units, optional 10W or 40W laser. About $1,749. Currently sixth at 9.3. All3DP treated it as two printers in one box. Buy it when soluble supports or two materials are the job, or when a maker-space laser is why you opened the tab. Skip it as a hotter H2S. The chamber story is still the H2S.
Do not buy the Bambu Lab H2D hoping $1,749 becomes a 65°C H2S with a mapping sticker.
Buy resin if the part is a miniature or a billable model
Resin is a vat, a peel, IPA, and a cure. You are buying surface and XY pixels. You are not buying a nylon drone arm.
The professional vat is the Formlabs Form 4: Low-Force Stereolithography 2.0, dual-LCD, 200×125×210 mm, 50-micron XY, 25–300 micron layers, dental and BioMed resins you cannot legally buy in a Mars bottle, Form Wash plus Form Cure. About $3,499 on the live list. Currently fifth at 9.4. All3DP cited up to 4× the Form 3+ on speed. Hackaday's line still holds — billable work justifies it; a hobby does not. Buy it when you quote jobs. Skip it as a $300 Mars with extra zeros.
The tabletop default is the Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra: 7-inch 9K (8,520×4,320), 18-micron XY, 153×77×165 mm, tilt release up to 150 mm/h, pre-leveled plate, AI camera. About $300. Currently seventh at 9.1 — 36 votes, the resin lane's favorite. Tom's Hardware called it the easiest resin entry under $300. Buy it when the part is a 28 mm hero. Skip it if you batch three figures a night — that is the M7 Pro.
The batch 14K is the Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro: 10.1-inch 14K (13,312×5,120), ~17-micron XY, 223×102×230 mm, heated vat, auto refill, up to 170 mm/h on high-speed resin. About $649. Currently eighth at 8.7. Tom's Hardware called the heated vat the unsung hero. GamesRadar+ called it the 2024 standout that still holds. Buy it when overnight dry-vat failures are the veto. Skip it as a Mars at twice the price if you print one miniature at a time.
Do not buy the Formlabs Form 4 hoping $3,499 becomes a P2S that also does minis.
Buy a kit if $199 is the honest brief
Open-frame FDM is PLA, PETG, and a gantry you can see. You are buying the door price. You are not buying ABS in January.
The multicolor kit is the Creality Ender-3 V4 Combo: unipiece aluminum gantry, 500 mm/s with input shaping, 220×220×250 mm, CFS up to 16 colors. About $399. Currently ninth at 8.3. Tom's Hardware landed on the pre-squared gantry. All3DP called it beginner-friendlier than any Ender before it. Buy it when color changes are the headline and the chamber is not. Skip it as a P1S. The frame is open.
The first printer is the Creality Ender 3 V3 SE: Sprite direct drive, CR Touch plus strain-gauge Z, 220×220×250 mm, ~15-minute assembly, PLA / PETG / TPU. About $199. Currently tenth at 7.8 — 39 votes, second only to the P2S. Owners outrun the expert score because it actually prints on day one. Buy it when $200 is the ceiling and curiosity is the job. Skip it as a second machine you will ask to print nylon.
Do not buy the Creality Ender 3 V3 SE hoping $199 becomes a 65°C H2S.
Volume and heat are the part, not the brochure
256 mm cube, appliance FDM: Bambu Lab P2S, Bambu Lab P1S.
250×220×270 mm, 55°C steel: Prusa Core One.
350×320×325 mm, 65°C engineering: Bambu Lab H2S.
320×320×325 mm, dual nozzle: Bambu Lab H2D.
220×220×250 mm, open FDM: Creality Ender-3 V4 Combo, Creality Ender 3 V3 SE.
200×125×210 mm, LFS: Formlabs Form 4.
223×102×230 mm, 14K batch: Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro.
153×77×165 mm, 9K tabletop: Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra.
A helmet split in half is still glue. Buy headroom.
This list is not a drill, a rising desk, or a mesh pack
A printer makes the part. The holes in that part are a driver — voltage and torque in the power-drill buying guide, then Best Power Drills.
The bench should not sit-stand under 25 kg of chamber. Dual-motor vs converter is the standing-desk buying guide, then Best Standing Desks. Do not park an H2S on a 35 lb VariDesk tray.
Bambu cloud, an AMS dryer, and a failure camera want a radio that stays up. Generation and backhaul are the mesh-wifi buying guide, then Best Mesh WiFi Systems.
Browse the rest of Computing when the printer is one box on the bench, not the whole shop.
Do not buy a $3,499 Formlabs Form 4 to hang a shelf.
Then shop the list
Pick enclosed FDM vs heated-chamber vs resin vs a kit, then volume, then whether color changes need AMS or CFS. Then open Best 3D Printers and buy the highest-ranked printer in that lane.
Appliance default: Bambu Lab P2S. Open-source tank: Prusa Core One. Hobbyist enclosed: Bambu Lab P1S. Engineering chamber: Bambu Lab H2S. Dual-nozzle / laser: Bambu Lab H2D. Billable resin: Formlabs Form 4. Tabletop resin: Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra. Batch 14K: Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro. Budget multicolor: Creality Ender-3 V4 Combo. First printer: Creality Ender 3 V3 SE.

Common Questions
Buy an enclosed FDM appliance if you want filament that just works: the Bambu Lab P2S (servo extruder, Active Airflow, AMS 2 Pro, about $599, currently first at 9.7) if daily PLA through CF is the product; the Prusa Core One (steel exoskeleton, 55°C chamber, open firmware, about $1,299, currently second at 9.6) if you want to own the machine in year five; the Bambu Lab P1S (enclosed CoreXY, AMS, about $399, currently third at 9.5) if most hobbyists should actually buy that one. Buy heated-chamber or dual-nozzle production if the part is a tool: the Bambu Lab H2S (active 65°C, 350×320×325 mm, about $1,249) for PA-CF and PET-CF; the Bambu Lab H2D (true dual nozzle, 320×320×325 mm, about $1,749) for two materials or a laser combo. Buy resin if the part is a miniature or a billable model: Formlabs Form 4 (LFS 2.0, about $3,499) if the job is quoted; Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra (9K, about $300) if tabletop is the hobby; Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro (14K, heated vat, about $649) if you batch figures. Buy a kit if $199–$399 and PLA are the honest brief: Creality Ender-3 V4 Combo (CFS multicolor, about $399) or Ender 3 V3 SE (about $199). Architecture first. A 500 mm/s hangtag does not put a wash station on a P2S, and a $199 Ender does not become a Form 4 because the listing said 3D.
For most buyers who want one enclosed machine that prints PLA through ABS without a weekend of tuning, the Bambu Lab P2S — DynaSense servo, 256 mm cube, 500 mm/s, AMS 2 Pro, about $599. It currently leads Best 3D Printers at 9.7. Open-source longevity: Prusa Core One. Hobbyist default: Bambu Lab P1S. Engineering chamber: Bambu Lab H2S. Dual-nozzle / multi-tool: Bambu Lab H2D. Billable resin: Formlabs Form 4. Tabletop resin: Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra. Batch 14K resin: Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro. Budget multicolor FDM: Creality Ender-3 V4 Combo. First printer under $200: Creality Ender 3 V3 SE. Confirm the live community ranking before you buy — votes move. The ranking story is The Best 3D Printers in 2026.
Buy FDM if the part should be a tool, a bracket, a helmet half, or a prototype you hold. Filament is PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, nylon, carbon-fiber — a spool and a heated bed. That is the Bambu P-series, the Prusa Core One, the H2S, the H2D, and both Enders. Buy resin if the part is a miniature, jewelry, a dental model, or a surface that has to look injection-molded at 18 microns. That is a vat, IPA, gloves, and a cure — Form 4, Mars 5 Ultra, Photon M7 Pro. Resin does not make a drone frame. FDM does not make a 9K tabletop hero. Do not buy the Form 4 hoping $3,499 becomes a P2S with smoother walls, and do not buy the P1S hoping 256 mm of PETG becomes an 18-micron miniature.
Enclosure if you will print ABS, ASA, or anything that warps in a draft. That is the P2S, P1S, Core One, H2S, and H2D. The Enders are open — PLA and PETG, not a nylon weekend. Active heat is a second decision: Core One to 55°C, H2S to 65°C. AMS / CFS if color changes or soluble supports are the job: P2S (AMS 2 Pro with drying), P1S (AMS), H2D (up to four AMS, one path per nozzle), Ender-3 V4 Combo (CFS, up to 16 colors). A single-spool P2S still beats a 16-color Ender on ABS. Do not buy the V4 Combo hoping an open gantry becomes a 65°C H2S, and do not buy the H2S hoping carbon fiber is a party-trick AMS print.
The P2S if speed, a 15-minute unbox, and a $599 receipt are the product — servo extruder, Active Airflow, 256 mm cube, currently first at 9.7. The Core One if open firmware, a steel case you can field-service, and a 55°C chamber you will still have in 2031 are the product — about $1,299 on the live list, kit nearer $949, currently second at 9.6. Tom's Hardware still calls the Core One the complete enclosed prosumer. How-To Geek and Hackster.io treat the P2S as the appliance. Neither is resin. Neither is a $199 Ender. Do not buy the Core One hoping $1,299 becomes a faster P2S, and do not buy the P2S hoping Bambu cloud becomes Prusa's parts drawer.
Enclosed hobbyist FDM: the Bambu Lab P1S at about $399 — 256 mm cube, 500 mm/s, AMS, currently third at 9.5 and the printer most hobbyists should actually buy. Budget multicolor FDM: the Creality Ender-3 V4 Combo at about $399 — CFS, 500 mm/s, 220×220×250 mm, currently ninth at 8.3, open frame, PLA and PETG. First printer: the Creality Ender 3 V3 SE at about $199 — Sprite direct drive, CR Touch, currently tenth at 7.8 with 39 votes, second only to the P2S. Tabletop resin under $400: the Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra at about $300. All four live on Best 3D Printers. Do not buy the V3 SE hoping $199 becomes a P1S enclosure, and do not buy the P1S hoping PETG becomes a 9K miniature.
Buy the H2S at about $1,249 if the filament is PA-CF, PET-CF, or PPS-CF and the chamber has to hold 65°C — 350×320×325 mm, hardened path, currently fourth at 9.4. Buy the H2D at about $1,749 if two nozzles or a laser module are the brief — 320×320×325 mm, 350°C dual-nozzle hotend, optional 10W or 40W laser, currently sixth at 9.3. The H2D is not the hotter chamber. The H2S is not two materials without purge tricks. Skip both if you print PLA — that is the P2S or the P1S. Do not buy the H2D hoping $1,749 becomes a 65°C H2S, and do not buy the H2S hoping a heated box becomes a laser cutter.
On a bench that does not rise. An enclosed CoreXY is 20-plus kg and a chamber that gets warm — that is not a 35 lb standing-desk converter. Dual-motor vs converter is the standing-desk buying guide, then Best Standing Desks. Bambu cloud, AMS drying, and a failure camera want a radio that stays up; generation and backhaul are the mesh-wifi buying guide, then Best Mesh WiFi Systems. Mounting holes in a print are a drill, not a second printer — voltage and torque in the power-drill buying guide, then Best Power Drills. Do not buy a $1,749 H2D hoping it levels a wobbling converter, and do not buy a $1,699 Eero hoping it unclogs a nozzle.
