Most mesh-WiFi shopping starts in the wrong place. A 27 Gbps hangtag, a "covers 10,000 sq ft" badge, and a studio speed test next to the router are how retailers sell the category before the first dead bedroom. The decision that actually matters is generation: a Wi-Fi 7 flagship your fiber and house can use, a Wi-Fi 6E pack that covers a normal gigabit home, or a Wi-Fi 6 three-pack you bought to kill a rented ISP gateway.

Get that split wrong and you own a $2,299 Netgear Orbi 970 Series you asked to feed a 300 Mbps cable modem — or a $299 Amazon Eero 6+ you curse because the plaster third floor never saw 6 GHz.

Buy Wi-Fi 7 if the fiber or the house can use it

Flagship is multi-gig WAN, a radio that stays up when forty clients argue, and an app you will not open again. You are buying the next five years, not a speed-test screenshot.

The simplest flagship is the Amazon Eero Max 7: tri-band Wi-Fi 7 (BE27000), Multi-Link Operation, two 10 Gbps and two 2.5 Gbps ports per node, Thread plus Matter, about 7,500 sq ft on a three-pack. About $1,699. Currently first at 9.5. Buy it when the house already lives in Alexa and you refuse a weekend in Orbi menus. Skip it if you wanted a radio reserved only for backhaul. That 6 GHz lane is shared. That is the Orbi or the Deco.

The dedicated-backhaul apex is the Netgear Orbi 970 Series: quad-band Wi-Fi 7, a 6 GHz channel reserved for node-to-node traffic, 10 Gbps WAN plus 10 Gbps LAN, about 10,000 sq ft. About $2,299. Currently second at 9.3. Buy it when the house is over 5,000 square feet with brick, plaster, or a concrete sub-level and the ISP can actually fill a 5 or 10 Gbps pipe. Skip it for a 1,800 sq ft condo. That money is a sculpture.

The quad-band value is the TP-Link Deco BE95: split 6 GHz, BE33000, 10 Gbps I/O on every node, HomeShield baseline with no required fee, about 7,800 sq ft. About $1,199. Currently third at 9.1. Buy it when you want Orbi architecture without Orbi money. Skip it if the Deco app's density is why you opened an Eero tab.

The power-user two-pack is the Asus ZenWiFi BT10: tri-band BE18000, AiMesh so older Asus boxes can join later, dual 10 Gbps ports, lifetime AiProtection Pro, about 6,000 sq ft. About $999. Currently fourth at 8.9. Buy it when VLAN, WireGuard, or a console you will actually open is the job. Skip it if "one tap and forget" is why you opened the tab. That is Eero.

The affordable Wi-Fi 7 is the Linksys Velop Pro 7: tri-band BE11000, MLO, 5 Gbps WAN, about 9,000 sq ft on a three-pack. About $1,199. Currently ninth at 7.9. Buy it when you want the generation without quad-band pricing. Skip it if Eero polish is the product. Same dollars as the TP-Link Deco BE95; different radio count.

The mid-tier Wi-Fi 7 three-pack that is not on this list is the eero Pro 7. The honest flagship-versus-that-price conversation is eero Pro 7 vs Netgear Orbi 970. Then come back to Best Mesh WiFi Systems and buy the highest-ranked pack in the generation you actually need.

Buy 6E if a gigabit plan and a normal house are the job

Middle is the 6 GHz lane without paying for 320 MHz you will not fill. You are buying congestion relief, not a theoretical 40 Gbps sticker.

The Google default is the Google Nest WiFi Pro: tri-band Wi-Fi 6E, Google Home-only setup, Thread on every node, about 6,600 sq ft, two 1 Gbps ports. About $399. Currently fifth at 8.6. Buy it when Nest cameras and a Nest thermostat already run the house. Skip it if you wanted a web UI or a 2.5 Gbps WAN. There is no console. That is the feature.

The Eero 6E is the Amazon Eero Pro 6E: tri-band, 2.5 Gbps WAN, TrueMesh, Thread plus Matter, about 6,000 sq ft. About $699. Currently sixth at 8.4. Buy it when you want the Eero app and you do not have a closet of Wi-Fi 7 clients. Skip it if Eero Plus for parental controls will annoy you. That is the Deco.

The value 6E is the TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro: AXE5400, 2.5 Gbps on every node, HomeShield included, about 7,200 sq ft. About $599. Currently seventh at 8.2. Buy it when you would rather spend the $100 versus the Pro 6E on a switch. Skip it if guided-setup polish is why you opened Eero.

A $399 Nest does not become the Amazon Eero Max 7 because the listing said tri-band.

Buy Wi-Fi 6 if you are killing a rented gateway

Entry is a three-pack, a bridge-mode ISP combo, and whole-home coverage that used to cost $400. You are buying the rental fee back, not 6 GHz.

The honest upgrade is the Amazon Eero 6+: dual-band Wi-Fi 6, two 1 Gbps ports, TrueMesh plus Thread, about 4,500 sq ft. About $299. Currently tenth at 7.7. Experts score it 75; owners score it 85 — the widest expert-community gap on this list — because people who left a $15-a-month combo unit stop arguing about bands. Buy it for sub-gigabit broadband and under about 30 clients. Skip it as a cheaper Max 7. It is a different radio.

The large-home Wi-Fi 6 leftover is the Netgear Orbi RBK863: tri-band with dedicated 5 GHz backhaul, 10 Gbps WAN, about 8,000 sq ft. About $999 list. Currently eighth at 8.0. Buy it on a sale closer to $700 when mid-tier 6E dies in plaster and nobody in the house has a 6 GHz client. Skip it at full price. That money belongs on the TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro or the Asus ZenWiFi BT10.

Do not buy the Amazon Eero 6+ hoping a firmware update grows 6 GHz.

Backhaul is the architecture, not the Gbps sticker

Dedicated 6 GHz wireless backhaul: Netgear Orbi 970 Series, TP-Link Deco BE95.

Dedicated 5 GHz wireless backhaul: Netgear Orbi RBK863.

Shared 6 GHz (clients plus backhaul): Amazon Eero Max 7, Asus ZenWiFi BT10, Linksys Velop Pro 7.

Ethernet between nodes beats any reserved radio. If the walls already have cable, buy the pack with ports you will plug in — then stop reading coverage stickers.

Fall is when the house fills with devices

Shorter evenings. More streams. Kids on the same SSID after school. The first weekend guests hit the guest network. A mesh you install after the holiday buffer is a mesh you needed in September.
