How to Choose a Gaming Monitor: 1080p, 1440p, or 4K

A 540Hz hangtag is the wrong first question. Start with 1440p vs 4K, then IPS vs OLED vs size. Then shop Gavler's live ranking.

Refresh-rate banners are how monitors get oversold. A 540Hz hangtag, a 4K sticker on a GPU that cannot feed it, and an HDR400 badge on an IPS that will never look like OLED are how retailers sell the category. Resolution first, then the panel: 1080p high-Hz vs 1440p vs 4K, then IPS vs OLED vs VA, then 27 vs 32-plus — matched to the GPU and the games you actually play.

Get that split wrong and you own a $1,099 ASUS ROG Swift PG27UCDM you asked a midrange card to drive at 240Hz — or a $290 Fast IPS you curse because you wanted per-pixel blacks and bought a marketing nits number.

Buy 1440p if the GPU has to hold the frame rate

1440p is the default machine for a mainstream card. You are buying motion you can sustain, not a 4K hangtag you will downscale.

The category-defining OLED is the ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQDM: 27-inch LG WOLED, 2560x1440, 240Hz, 0.03ms GtG, ~99% DCI-P3, true 10-bit, DisplayHDR True Black 400. About $799. Currently seventh at 8.8. HDMI 2.0 is the honest console limit. Buy it when 1440p OLED is the job and ASUS firmware is the brand you already own. Skip it if you wanted HDMI 2.1 for a current-gen console — look at LG — or if $499 OLED is the budget.

The LG-tone alternative is the LG UltraGear 27GS95QE-B: same 27-inch 1440p 240Hz WOLED generation, ~275-nit typical, up to 1,000-nit HDR peak, HDMI 2.1, FreeSync Premium Pro plus G-Sync Compatible. About $799. Currently eighth at 8.6. Cooler out of the box than the ROG. Buy it for the brighter WOLED successor story and console HDMI. Skip it if you already decided on ROG chassis language.

The value OLED is the KTC G27P6S: 26.5-inch MLA+ W-OLED, 1440p, 240Hz, 0.03ms, KVM, USB-C 65W PD, speakers. About $499. Currently tenth at 8.4. GamesRadar called out how good a cheaper OLED could be. Buy it to get onto OLED without $799. Skip it if a three-year ASUS or LG burn-in desk is why you are spending.

The no-OLED 1440p is the ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS: 27-inch Fast IPS, 180Hz, 1ms GtG with variable overdrive, DisplayHDR 400, FreeSync Premium plus G-Sync Compatible. About $290. Currently eleventh at 7.9. Tom's Hardware called the accuracy and flexibility. Buy it for daylight brightness, a static desktop, or a second screen. Skip it if you asked HDR400 to be True Black.

Buy 4K if the GPU can feed 3840x2160

4K is density or scale. Same pixel count at 27 and 32. Different PPI. Same render load.

The 27-inch density flagship is the ASUS ROG Swift PG27UCDM: 26.5-inch 4th-gen QD-OLED, 3840x2160, ~166 PPI, 240Hz, 0.03ms, Dolby Vision, DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20, custom heatsink, three-year burn-in coverage. About $1,099. Currently first at 9.4. RTINGS' best-tested gaming monitor in the data. Buy it when you sit close, want the sharpest 4K on this list, and own the GPU. Skip it if 32-inch scale is the brief — that is MSI — or if $899 already buys the same generation of panel.

The smart-money 27-inch 4K is the Dell Alienware AW2725Q: same 4th-gen Samsung QD-OLED recipe, Dolby Vision, 166 PPI, 240Hz, DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC, three-year Premium Panel Exchange. About $899. Currently fourth at 9.15. Tom's Hardware: serious value and high performance. Buy it when flagship picture at 27-inch 4K is the job and the extra ports are not. Skip it if uncompressed DisplayPort 2.1 is a hard requirement.

The floor of 4K OLED is the GIGABYTE MO27U2: 27-inch 4K 240Hz QD-OLED, USB-C KVM, 2x HDMI 2.1, three-year burn-in warranty. About $649. Currently ninth at 8.5. ~250-nit SDR and a basic stand are the trade. TechRadar said the tandem panel cannot quite live up to the very best. Buy it to get onto 4K OLED without four figures. Skip it if Dolby Vision and a polished stand are why you were looking at Dell.

The 32-inch scale default is the MSI MPG 321URX: 31.5-inch 3rd-gen QD-OLED, 4K 240Hz, ~1,000-nit peak, DisplayHDR True Black 400, KVM, USB-C PD, DisplayPort 1.4. About $999. Currently second at 9.3. PC Gamer's 2026 top pick. Flat. Buy it when 32-inch 4K is the work-and-play size and you do not want a curve. Skip it if Dolby Vision plus curve is the whole spend — that is Alienware.

The curved 32-inch is the Alienware AW3225QF: 31.6-inch QD-OLED, 4K 240Hz, 1700R, Dolby Vision, G-Sync Compatible plus FreeSync Premium Pro. About $1,099. Currently third at 9.2. Tom's Hardware's overall flagship line. Buy it for immersion at 16:9 without going 49-inch. Skip it if flat text for work is the priority — MSI or the G8.

The flat 32-inch with a TV brain is the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SD): 31.5-inch 4K 240Hz QD-OLED, Tizen (AirPlay 2, Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce Now), HDR10/HLG, no Dolby Vision. About $1,299. Currently fifth at 9.1. Buy it when the monitor has to be a streaming box. Skip it if you already own a stick and just wanted the MSI panel.

Buy 1080p high-Hz only for competitive esports

1080p at very high refresh is a different machine: large pixels, easy GPU load, ranked shooters. It is not a cheaper 4K.

This ranking does not carry a dedicated 1080p esports panel. Do not buy the ASUS ROG Swift PG27UCDM or the GIGABYTE MO27U2 hoping 4K OLED becomes a 360Hz 1080p. If the GPU will not hold 1440p, stay on 1440p Fast IPS — the ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS — or wait for a 1080p list. Downscaling a 4K OLED in a competitive title is a workaround, not an architecture.

The Acer Nitro XV275K P3biipruzx is a 27-inch 4K 160Hz Mini-LED, not a dual-mode 1080p/320Hz SKU. That dual-mode story is a different Nitro. Do not invent it here.

Buy OLED for contrast. Buy IPS when burn-in or daylight is the job.

OLED is per-pixel light. IPS is a backlight. VA is the contrast-without-OLED panel this list does not rank.

A static HUD eight hours a day still argues for IPS or Mini-LED. Varied games and a three-year burn-in warranty argue for OLED. VA would sit between IPS contrast and OLED response. It is not on Best Gaming Monitors.

27 vs 32 vs 49 is seating distance, not quality

PPI, not the marketing diagonal, is the size decision.

27-inch, sit close, competitive or dense 4K: ASUS ROG Swift PG27UCDM, Dell Alienware AW2725Q, GIGABYTE MO27U2, the 1440p OLEDs, ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS, Acer Nitro XV275K P3biipruzx.

32-inch 4K, mixed work and play: MSI MPG 321URX (flat), Alienware AW3225QF (1700R), Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SD) (flat plus Tizen).

49-inch 32:9, deep desk: Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SD).

The 27-versus-32 4K fork is ASUS PG27UCDM vs MSI MPG 321URX. Same 3840x2160. Different canvas. Do not buy 32-inch to lower GPU load.

Ultrawide beats 16:9 when the game is a cockpit

A 49-inch 32:9 is two 27-inch 1440p monitors with the bezel deleted. It is not a bigger 4K.

That product is the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SD): 5120x1440, 1800R, 240Hz QD-OLED, FreeSync Premium Pro, Tizen. About $1,499. Currently sixth at 9.0. Buy it for sim racing, flight sim, strategy, and a single-screen workstation that also games. Skip it for ranked 16:9 shooters and skip it on a shallow desk.

A 16:9 curve is the Alienware AW3225QF. Everyone else on this list is flat 16:9. Do not pay G9 money for a movie that was mastered 16:9.

VRR is the floor. The Hz sticker is not.

Adaptive-Sync is the GPU and the panel agreeing on a moving refresh. Without it, 240Hz still tears when frames dip.

Most of this list is FreeSync Premium Pro and G-Sync Compatible together. The ASUS ROG Swift PG27UCDM is the DisplayPort 2.1 exception that can carry uncompressed 4K 240Hz. The MSI MPG 321URX, Dell Alienware AW2725Q, and Samsung 4K OLEDs use DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC — visually lossless for almost everyone, annoying if you hate alt-tab black frames. The Acer Nitro XV275K P3biipruzx has HDMI 2.1 VRR for consoles.

Turn VRR on. Then pick the resolution your GPU can hold. A 180Hz IPS with VRR will feel cleaner than a 240Hz OLED with it off.

HDR is True Black, DisplayHDR 1000, or a badge

OLED True Black 400 is contrast. Mini-LED DisplayHDR 1000 is highlight punch in a bright room. DisplayHDR 400 on IPS is a sticker.

Useful OLED HDR: the QD-OLED and W-OLED lanes above, with Dolby Vision extra on the ASUS ROG Swift PG27UCDM, Alienware AW3225QF, and Dell Alienware AW2725Q.

Useful Mini-LED HDR: the Acer Nitro XV275K P3biipruzx at about $599 — ~1,200-nit peak, ~600-nit SDR, 99% DCI-P3 and 99% Adobe RGB. Blooming is the tax. Burn-in is not.

Marketing HDR: the ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS. Buy it for 1440p speed, not for cinematic tone-mapping.

Do not buy nits on a hangtag in a dark room where OLED already won, and do not buy a 250-nit SDR OLED as a sunroom display.

Competitive vs cinematic is the game, not the RGB

Competitive wants 27-inch, high refresh, easy frames: 1440p OLED or Fast IPS, or 27-inch 4K only if the card can hold it.

Cinematic wants scale, HDR, and immersion: 32-inch 4K OLED, Mini-LED in a bright room, or the G9 if the title is a cockpit.

One monitor can do both if you pick 1440p OLED or 27-inch 4K and stop chasing 49-inch for Valorant. The Acer Nitro XV275K P3biipruzx is the no-OLED split for mixed AAA and a bright desk — 4K 160Hz, not a 1080p hotspot.

This list is not a TV, a standing desk, or a keyboard

A gaming monitor is the panel on a desk. A living-room OLED is a different architecture — room, size, and HDMI 2.1 at 120Hz — on the TV buying guide, then Best TVs.
