Common Questions

Best Drones — FAQ

In the US, recreational drone pilots must pass the TRUST (The Recreational UAS Safety Test) — a free online exam. Drones over 0.55 lbs (250g) must be registered with the FAA ($5 for 3 years). Commercial drone pilots need a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Rules vary by country, so check local regulations before flying.

The DJI Mini 4 Pro and DJI Mini 5 Pro are excellent starter drones: they weigh under 249g (avoiding some registration requirements in many countries), offer obstacle avoidance, excellent camera quality, and intuitive controls. For a budget option, the DJI Neo 2 or Potensic Atom 2 provide good capability at lower prices.

Top consumer drones fly 30-45 minutes per battery and maintain video signal up to 10-20 km away (though you must keep visual line of sight by law). Real-world flight time is typically 20-30% less than manufacturer claims due to wind, maneuvers, and video recording. Carrying extra batteries is recommended for extended shoots.

Rankings combine expert review aggregation with community voting. Each drone receives a Gavler Score (out of 10) based on professional reviews evaluating camera quality, flight performance, obstacle avoidance, and ease of use. Community members vote for their top pick with one vote per list.
