The decision that actually matters is architecture: a ventilated overnight suspension built for 30–50 lb, an ultralight framed or frameless pack that only works if the kit is actually light, a day/fastpack sized for hours or one night, or a women's-specific hipbelt if unisex geometry already failed.

Get that split wrong and you own a $350 Baltoro you keep asking to stroll a nature-center loop — or a $395 Dyneema sack you curse on night two with 40 lb of un-edited gear.

Buy a ventilated overnight pack if the load is 30-plus lb

A ventilated overnight pack is a framesheet, a hipbelt that actually sits on bone, and a mesh or air channel so a 35 lb weekend does not cook your back. It is not a 24L daypack with a taller lid.

The default is the Osprey Atmos AG 65: continuous Anti-Gravity mesh, Fit-on-the-Fly hipbelt, 65 liters, about 4 lb 9 oz in M, 30–50 lb load range, recycled 210D body with a 500D base, integrated raincover. About $270. Currently first. Outdoor Gear Lab's multi-day comfort pick. Switchback still calls the design one of the most well-rounded on the market. Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee is the lifetime repair story. Buy it when the pack has to fit a lot of torsos and carry a normal overnight kit without drama. Skip it if your base weight is already under about 15 lb — you paid for mesh and ounces you will feel every climb. Humid days still hold some heat against the wrap; that is the documented complaint, not a reason to buy frameless by default.

Wirecutter's under-$200 backpacking pick. Buy it as a first overnight pack so the leftover money goes to a pad or shelter. Skip it as a 50 lb hauler — the rating stops at 40, and the Baltoro exists for a reason.

Buy ultralight framed or frameless if the kit is actually light

Ultralight is a weight class, not a lifestyle sticker. These packs start working when the packed bag stays near their load line. They fail when you keep the Atmos-sized kit and delete the frame.

Buy a daypack or fastpack if the trip is hours, not a week

A day/fastpack is water, layers, and maybe one night. It is not a 65L you cinched and hoped.

The daypack is the Gregory Zulu 24 LT: 24 liters, 36 oz, VaporSpan mesh, FreeFloat Pro hipbelt, 100D, 3L reservoir sleeve. About $170. Currently fifth. This is Gregory's overnight suspension scaled down so a long approach does not live on skinny shoulder straps. Buy it for all-day ridges and scrambles. Skip it for a two-night food carry — 24 liters is the constraint, especially in winter layers.

The weekend/fastpack is the Osprey Talon Oxygen 44: 44 liters, about 2 lb 15 oz, AirScape, sliding yoke, 15–35 lb. About $240. Buy women's-specific if the hipbelt is the product

Most "women's" hangtags are a shorter torso and a colorway. One pack on this list actually changes the geometry.

Fit is torso and hip, not height

Measure C7 to iliac crest. The belt sits on the hip shelf. Load lifters about 45 degrees. Walk with 25 lb in the bag. An empty hanger lies.
