Common Questions

Best Smart Thermostats — FAQ

For most homes, the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is the smarter buy. It's $20-30 cheaper, ships with a SmartSensor in the box for multi-room temperature averaging, and supports Apple HomeKit natively in addition to Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings. The Nest 4th Gen is the better pick if you're all-in on Google Home, want the best-looking thermostat on the wall, or specifically value its Soli-radar proximity display and the redesigned no-C-wire-required install. For everyone else, the Ecobee is the default.

Most do, but not all. The Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen was specifically redesigned to operate without a C-wire in the majority of US homes — that is its main install advantage. The Ecobee Premium and Enhanced both require a C-wire, but ship with a Power Extender Kit (PEK) in the box that adds one. The Honeywell Home T9 includes a C-wire adapter as well. The Wyze Thermostat ships with an adapter. The Sensi Touch 2, Honeywell T6 Pro, and Amazon Smart Thermostat require an existing C-wire. If you're not sure, pull your existing thermostat off the wall and look for a labeled "C" wire — if it's missing, prioritize the Nest 4th Gen, Ecobee (with PEK), Honeywell T9, or Wyze.

The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium and Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced both support Apple HomeKit natively — Siri can control them directly and they integrate fully into Apple Home automations. The Mysa V2 also supports HomeKit natively. The Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen supports Apple Home through Matter, but is not HomeKit-native — Siri control is more limited than with Ecobee. The Honeywell T9, Sensi Touch 2, Honeywell T6 Pro, Amazon Smart Thermostat, and Wyze Thermostat do not support HomeKit at all. For Apple-first households, the Ecobee Premium is the default pick.

Energy Star certifies that smart thermostats save an average of 8% on heating and cooling costs versus non-programmable thermostats — typically $50-100 per year for an average US home. The actual savings depend heavily on your usage patterns: homes that previously left heat on at 70°F all day will save more than homes that already programmed setbacks manually. Multi-room sensor systems like the Ecobee Premium and Honeywell T9 tend to outperform single-sensor models in occupancy-aware setbacks. Many US utility companies offer $30-100 rebates on Energy Star thermostats, which can effectively pay for the Amazon Smart Thermostat or Wyze Thermostat in their entirety.

Most 24V smart thermostats — Ecobee, Nest, Honeywell, Sensi, Amazon, Wyze — are DIY-installable for anyone comfortable taking off a wall plate and matching wire labels. Plan on 30-60 minutes for a first install. The exception is Mysa V2, which controls 120V/240V high-voltage line-voltage circuits (electric baseboard, in-floor radiant) and requires a licensed electrician in most US and Canadian jurisdictions. Pro-channel thermostats like the Honeywell T6 Pro are designed to be installed by HVAC contractors — DIY install is possible but you may forfeit the extended warranty.

Rankings combine expert review aggregation with community voting. Each thermostat receives a Gavler Score (out of 10) based on professional reviews evaluating energy savings, multi-room sensor support, smart-home platform compatibility, install ease, and long-term reliability. Community members cast one vote per list, so rankings reflect genuine buyer preference across the full price spectrum from $79 budget picks to $279 flagships.
