Breville Smart Oven Pro BOV845 Review: The Toaster Oven Everyone Else Is Measured Against
The Breville Smart Oven Pro BOV845 scores 9.2 on Gavler's Best Toaster Ovens list, where it is our number one. It is the countertop oven most kitchens should buy first: 1,800 watts, a convection fan, 10 functions including a 10-hour slow cook, and toast that two independent reviewers called even and consistent. The trade-offs are size and price. It takes real counter space, it costs more than some ovens with similar specs, and one lab-style test found its results more ordinary than the reputation suggests.
What it is
The BOV845 is Breville's full-size countertop convection oven, sold in the US as the BOV845BSSUSC. Reviewed lists a 0.8-cubic-foot interior and a 15.75 by 18.5 by 11 inch footprint, with ten settings: Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, Warm and Slow Cook. Breville's pitch is Element IQ, which adjusts power across independent heating elements for each function. The warranty is one year limited.
It has been around long enough that the reviews are old. Reviewed's James Aitchison tested it in December 2019, and AmazingRibs published its review in March 2019 and last updated it in October 2025. We also read a newer hands-on test from ShouldIt, published in 2022 and updated in December 2025. Keep the age of the Reviewed piece in mind: its prices, and its line "The Breville Smart Oven Pro is the best toaster oven you can buy," date to 2019.
In use
Toast is where the Smart Oven Pro built its name. Aitchison wrote that "the Breville oven did an excellent job of evenly toasting bread," with consistent results at Medium and High darkness, though the Low setting slightly under-toasted. Bagels toasted evenly on the cut side but ran slightly dark. He called the Pizza setting "uniformly excellent," with cook times shorter than the manufacturer suggested.
AmazingRibs' Clint Cantwell, who rated it five stars, described the oven as "basically as functional as a quality oven but requiring much less time to pre-heat given its compact size." He reported that "from the jump we were making perfect toast," used it for cookies, reheating pizza and frozen chicken strips, and noted the slow cook mode runs for up to 10 hours before the unit switches to warm.
Not every test is as warm. ShouldIt's team, which publishes timed results, gave the oven an overall 7.8. Toast scored 6.8, with a first batch at darkness level 5 taking 5 minutes 13 seconds and a second batch 3 minutes 42 seconds. A 9-inch thick-crust pizza baked in about 4 minutes at 450 degrees with convection but browned unevenly, and baked french fries came out with uneven color and texture. A whole chicken took about an hour at 350 degrees and scored 7.5. Their conclusion was blunt: the 1,800-watt output "did not translate into outstanding results," and they saw no significant benefit from Element IQ. Cleaning, on the other hand, was "extremely easy" thanks to the stainless exterior and non-stick interior. They called the convection fan "pleasantly quiet."
That divergence is worth sitting with. Two older, enthusiast-leaning reviews found great toast; a newer methodical test found toast that varies batch to batch. Our read is that the oven is very good rather than magical, and that results depend on what you ask of it.
Strengths
- Versatility. It toasts, bakes, roasts, broils, reheats and slow-cooks. For one appliance on a counter, that is an unusually complete list.
- Fast preheat. Cantwell's key praise, and the practical reason to use it over a wall oven for small jobs.
- Broiling. A page reproducing the Reviewed review reports it "was the only toaster oven that broiled chicken breasts so well that they looked like they'd come off a grill." We read only a mirror of that text, so treat it as secondary.
- Easy to clean. ShouldIt's testers found the interior simple to wipe down, though grease can permanently stain the heating elements.
Trade-offs and who should skip it
It is big. Reviewed's footprint of about 18.5 inches wide and ShouldIt's measured weight of 18.1 pounds mean this is a permanent resident of a countertop, not an appliance you tuck away.
It is not cheap. Aitchison wrote it is "more expensive than some toaster ovens with similar specs." ShouldIt called it "not very budget-friendly" and wished for an additional oven rack. Cantwell conceded the price, about $275, "can seem pricey."
Small annoyances. Aitchison found "the initial setup is over-complicated," the manual has no recipes, and slow cook mode has limited capacity. ShouldIt flagged no door safety mechanism and short back buffers for wall clearance.
No air fry. If crisping is the reason you are shopping, skip it.
How it compares
The Panasonic FlashXpress NB-G110P, rank two at 9.0 and $150, is the choice if four slices and no preheat cover your needs and you want to spend far less. The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, scored 8.9 at $400, adds air frying and sheet-pan volume at a higher price. The Ninja Foodi XL Pro DT201, rank three on the toaster oven list at 8.8 and $230, is the family-volume option if air frying matters more than toast.

We give the Smart Oven Pro a 9.2. It is the countertop oven that covers most small-batch wall-oven jobs, backed by a five-star AmazingRibs review, Reviewed's early endorsement, and a more measured 7.8 from ShouldIt. That spread is why we do not push it higher. Buy it if one oven has to do everything and you have the counter space. Buy the Panasonic if toast and reheats are the job.
