“The no-drawer box — if you can plumb it. Washable granules and a 34-minute cycle are the product. Without a drain it is a sculpture.”

CatGenie A.I. Review: No Waste Drawer, If You Can Plumb It
The CatGenie A.I. sits at rank nine on our Best Automatic Litter Boxes list with a 7.7. It's the only box on this list that doesn't have a waste drawer, because it doesn't keep the waste at all — it flushes it, using a cold-water line and a drain the same way a washing machine does. That's a genuinely different architecture from every globe or rake on this list, and it earns real praise for eliminating bagged litter entirely. It also earns a real asterisk: without plumbing access, it's an expensive sculpture, and even with plumbing access it does nothing for odor between cycles.
What it actually is
CatGenie A.I. (Amazon /dp/B0CP9QTP72) scoops solids off the top of the litter after a cat leaves, liquefies and flushes them through a toilet T-adapter or laundry-standpipe connection (both included in the kit), then washes the reusable granules with a proprietary SaniSolution cartridge and warm-air dries them. There's no clumping clay and no weekly bag-and-toss — the granules are washable pearls, not disposable litter, and the recurring cost is SaniSolution cartridges rather than litter bags. The newer A.I. designation adds a smartphone app with three modes (Manual, Cat-Sensing, Automatic), up to eight scheduled cleanings a day, and a changeable delay before the machine activates after a cat leaves — useful for skittish cats. This is not the same product as CatGenie Whoosh, a separate, faster-flushing SKU that uses dissolvable clumping litter instead of washable granules.
The catch is entirely about plumbing. Without a cold-water line and a drain within hose reach, the CatGenie can't run at all.
In use
Catster's Kristin Hitchcock, reviewing the current A.I. model, broke the cleaning cycle into three phases: an automatic scoop of solids, a wash-and-agitate phase using water and cleaning solution via the "Genie Hand," and a hot-air drying phase. Her timing estimate: "The whole process takes anywhere from five to 45 minutes... it likely depends on how dirty the box is and how long the drying step takes." She also noted a real limitation in the scooping itself: "this machine didn't seem like it removed all the bits of feces. Some got stuck in the Genie Hand, and others were left in the box" — meaning the wash cycle, not the scoop, is doing most of the actual cleaning work.
On odor, both Catster and Cats.com's Mallory Crusta independently landed on the same conclusion, worded almost identically: Catster found "in between cleaning cycles, this machine does nothing to control odor," while Cats.com's testing was blunter still: "The CatGenie A.I. Self-Flushing Automatic Litter Box does not control odor at all between cleaning cycles." That's a real, repeated finding across two independent reviews, not a one-off complaint. Catster also flagged the noise: "the water slushing around during the cleaning cycle seems to make up the bulk of the noise. It sounds a lot like a washing machine" — loud enough that the unit ships with a roughly 10-hour overnight sleep cycle to keep it from running while owners sleep.
Cats.com's testing surfaced two more practical friction points: "The CatGenie's Washable Granules are small and lightweight, which makes them highly trackable, and the litter box doesn't do much to prevent scattering," and on multi-cat households specifically: "the lengthy cycles for cleaning... may take up to 40 minutes and could leave the litter box inoperable many times a day. This is a bigger issue for multi-cat homes."
Strengths
No waste drawer, no bagged litter, no scooping — genuinely the only product on this list that removes those chores entirely rather than automating them. The washable-granule system is septic-safe and doesn't require repurchasing litter on a recurring basis, just SaniSolution cartridges roughly every two to three months. Catster's own rating reflects the trade cleanly: 5 out of 5 on value, even while dinging it on price and features.
Trade-offs — who should skip it
Skip this if there's no drain within reach of where the box needs to sit — that's a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have. Skip it if odor between cycles matters to you day-to-day; two independent reviewers found it controls nothing between wash cycles, unlike a sealed carbon-filtered drawer. Skip it for a multi-cat household where cycles will run back-to-back, since a 40-minute wash means the box can be unusable "many times a day," per Cats.com's testing. And skip it for a cat with loose stools — CatGenie is built around firm waste that the Genie Hand can actually scoop.
How it compares
Against the Litter-Robot 4 (rank one on this list), the trade is architecture: CatGenie eliminates bagged waste but demands plumbing and tolerates zero between-cycle odor; the Litter-Robot 4 is a simple plug-in globe with a sealed drawer that contains odor continuously but still needs a weekly bag change. Against the PETKIT Pura Max 2 (rank five), another sealed-drawer globe, the Pura Max 2 needs no plumbing at all — the trade there is drawer maintenance versus a permanent flush-and-forget setup.
The Gavler verdict
A 7.7 for a genuinely different idea, honestly executed and honestly limited. If a drain is already where the box needs to be, CatGenie A.I. removes a chore no globe or rake on this list can: taking out the trash. If it isn't, or if between-cycle odor and multi-cat cycle backlogs are dealbreakers, a sealed-drawer globe like the Litter-Robot 4 or Pura Max 2 will serve most households better.
Common Questions
Only if you have a cold-water line and a drain within reach — a toilet T-adapter or laundry standpipe. If you do, it eliminates bagged litter waste entirely: solids liquefy and flush, and the washable granules get rinsed and dried in place. If you don't have plumbing access where the box needs to sit, this isn't the product to force it for.
A full cycle scoops solids off the top, liquefies and flushes them through your drain, washes the reusable granules with SaniSolution cleaning cartridges, and warm-air dries them. Catster's hands-on testing clocked the whole process anywhere from five to 45 minutes depending on how dirty the box is.
Zero odor control between cleaning cycles — Cats.com's testing was blunt on this point. The cleaning cycle itself is also loud, sounding like a washing machine, which is why the unit has a roughly 10-hour overnight sleep mode. And it only handles firm stools; a cat with chronic diarrhea is a bad match.
