Class 1 e-bikes assist up to 20 mph via pedaling only (most trail-friendly). Class 2 adds a throttle, also capped at 20 mph. Class 3 assists up to 28 mph via pedaling. Regulations vary by state and trail system — Class 1 is allowed in the most places. Choose based on your intended use: commuting (Class 3), recreation (Class 1), or versatility (Class 2).
Most e-bikes offer 25-70 miles of range per charge, depending on battery size, assist level, terrain, rider weight, and wind. Using lower assist levels and pedaling actively extends range significantly. Mid-drive motors are more efficient than hub motors on hilly terrain. Carrying a spare battery can double your range for long rides.
Rankings combine expert review aggregation with community voting. Each e-bike receives a Gavler Score (out of 10) based on professional reviews evaluating motor performance, battery range, build quality, ride comfort, and value. Community members vote for their top pick with one vote per list.
