Most dehumidifier shopping starts in the wrong place. A 70-pint hangover, a 7,000 sq ft banner, and a Wi-Fi badge are how retailers sell the category. The decision that actually matters is architecture: a compressor that removes DOE / AHAM pints, or a thermoelectric plate (or a silica pack) that removes ounces.
Get that split wrong and you own a 50-pint screaming in a bedroom — or a 22-watt Peltier you keep asking to dry a wet basement.

Buy a 50-pint compressor if the job is a wet basement
A 50-pint compressor is the basement machine. DOE 2019 / AHAM capacity is 50 pints/day at 65°F / 60% RH — the same class on every 50-pint here, not the retired 2012 "70-pint" sticker. Size by how wet the space is. Coverage banners lie.
The default is the Midea Cube 50-Pint (MAD50S1QWT): fastest published 90→40% RH dry-down in independent 50-pint tests (7:39), Energy Star Most Efficient (IEF 1.95), about 430 CFM, and a ~34-pint lift-and-twist tank so you empty it less than a 13–17 pint bucket. About $250. Currently first. Gravity hose; this SKU has no built-in pump — that is the MAD50PS sibling. Nested, it stores at roughly half height. Buy it when dry-down and tank size are the job. Do not buy this 50-pint for a closed 150 sq ft bedroom.
Same AHAM class, traditional chassis: the Frigidaire FHDD5034W1. Testers' #2 (8:32 dry-down), 2.7-gallon front bucket, top exhaust, 47–51 dBA, 41°F, gravity drain, no pump. About $319. Currently second. Buy it when you want a Frigidaire box you can roll to a floor drain, not a Cube tank. This is not the Gallery pump sibling.
The value 50-pint is the hOmeLabs HME1003: above-average dry-down (9:17), IEF 1.90, and the quietest measured of the top three. About $270. Currently third. The honest limits are a 12.8-pint tank and side exhaust that does not mask the compressor the way top-exhaust boxes do. Ignore the "120 pint" / 7,000 sq ft line — that is 95°F / 90% RH marketing. Pump is the HME1004, not this SKU.
The searched Honeywell is the Honeywell TP70WKN: still a 50-pint. The 70-pint name is the 2012 test. Included gravity hose, Mirage front RH display, 14-pint tank, no pump. About $280. Currently fifth. Slower (10:43) and louder in the same battery that put the Cube first. Buy the name and the hose in the box. Do not buy it as a 70-pint basement machine.
Buy a pump 50-pint if the drain is uphill
A built-in pump is not more pints. It is water that can climb to a sink or a window. Gravity still wins if a floor drain sits below the unit. A pump is the part most likely to fail.
The Frigidaire pump is the Frigidaire Gallery FGAC5044W1: High Humidity 50-pint, built-in pump plus gravity, 16.9-pint bucket, ionizer, Wi-Fi. About $349. Currently fourth. Buy it when the only drain is above the unit and you want a Frigidaire pump. The ionizer is extra air, not extra pints. The FHDD is the tested High Humidity chassis without the pump and with a larger bucket.
The energy + pump pick is the Hisense DH5026KP1G: Energy Star IEF 2.01 (highest certified IEF in this portable cluster), built-in pump, operation to 38°F, 2-year warranty. About $300. Currently eighth. Slower dry-down (10:35) than Cube / Frigidaire / hOmeLabs. Hisense recalled older R-290 units in 2023; this DH5026 line is the current, recall-clear SKU — that history is why it sits at 7.8. Public /dp listings rotate; the buy link is a search, not an invented ASIN.
Buy a 20-pint compressor if the room is a closed bedroom
A 20-pint DOE compressor is the sleep-adjacent machine. Real AHAM pints. Quieter official dBA. Wrong for a wet basement.
The pick is the Midea Cube 20-Pint (MAD20S1QWT): same lift-and-twist architecture as the 50-pint, 20 DOE pints, ~45 dBA, about 33 lb, gravity hose, Energy Star Most Efficient class. About $190. Currently sixth. The 1,500 sq ft banner is a dry-room claim — size by wetness, not the sticker. Buy it for a closed bedroom or office you want at 45–50% RH overnight. Buy the 50-pint Cube if the space is a basement. Buy the Eva-Dry EDV-1100 if the space is an RV bunk with no room for a compressor.
Buy whole-home if it is a crawl or a ducted house
Whole-home is a different job. No bucket. No casters into a bedroom corner.
The consumer unit you can actually buy is the AprilAire E070: 70 pints/day, Energy Star IEF 2.1, hose or floor drain (10-foot tubing in the box), no water tray, crawl-door size (12.5 × 12.5 × 25 in), USA coils, 5-year warranty. About $1,716. Currently seventh. Homes / sealed crawls up to about 2,200 sq ft. Professional install is recommended; many owners set it on the crawl floor, level it, and run the hose. The E070P pump-and-hang bundle is a different SKU.
Buy E070 when you do not want to empty a portable. Buy a 50-pint Cube or Frigidaire when the job is one wet room. Do not treat this as a $1,700 bedroom machine.
Buy thermoelectric or silica if the space is an RV, closet, or safe
A Peltier plate and a silica pack are not failed 20-pints. They are ounces, not AHAM pints. A compressor 20-pint removes more moisture in an hour than these do in a day.
The electric mini is the Eva-Dry EDV-1100: thermoelectric, 22 W, about 33 dB, 16 oz tray, auto shutoff. About $40. Currently ninth. Closed spaces around 1,100 cubic feet / about 122 sq ft. Optional 12V cord. No drain hose. Not recommended below 50°F. Buy it for a closed RV bunk, closet, or small bath. Do not expect basement pints from a Peltier plate.
The cordless pack is the Eva-Dry E-333 Renewable: silica gel, up to 333 cubic feet, hang or stand, recharge when the beads change color. About $30. Currently tenth. No compressor, no fan, no drain, no overnight runtime. Buy it for a safe or hanging closet with no outlet. It will not replace the EDV-1100 if you want continuous (still tiny) extraction, and it will not dry a bedroom.
Gravity vs pump is a drain decision, not a brand sticker
Wrong drain, wrong machine.
Gravity hose (floor drain or sink below the unit): Midea Cube 50-Pint, Midea Cube 20-Pint, Frigidaire FHDD5034W1, hOmeLabs HME1003, Honeywell TP70WKN (tube in the box).
Built-in pump (water has to climb): Frigidaire Gallery FGAC5044W1, Hisense DH5026KP1G.
No bucket — hose or drain only: AprilAire E070.
Tray or no drain: Eva-Dry EDV-1100, Eva-Dry E-333.
If gravity works, skip the pump. The Cube 50 tank is why you empty it less — it is not a substitute for a hose to a floor drain you already have.
Energy Star is the second question. The app is last.
Wi-Fi does not pull water. IEF is how you compare compressors that share a 50-pint DOE number.
Energy Star Most Efficient / class leader (portable): Midea Cube 50-Pint IEF 1.95. Hisense DH5026KP1G IEF 2.01 — buy it for watts, a pump, and 38°F, not dry-down time. Midea Cube 20-Pint is Most Efficient class in the bedroom size.
Energy Star, honest middle: hOmeLabs HME1003 IEF 1.90. Frigidaire FHDD5034W1 IEF 1.80. Frigidaire Gallery FGAC5044W1 and Honeywell TP70WKN carry the badge; they are not the IEF reason to buy.
Whole-home IEF: AprilAire E070 at 2.1. Different machine.
Not in the IEF race: Eva-Dry EDV-1100 (22 W because extraction is ounces), Eva-Dry E-333 (cordless silica).
An app is optional. Cube 50, Cube 20, FHDD, Gallery, and the current HME1003 have one. Buy a dashboard only if you will open it. Honeywell's extra is the Mirage display you can read across the room. Skip ionizer stickers.
70-pint stickers and coverage banners lie
Trust DOE 2019 / AHAM pints at 65°F and 60% RH. Ignore the larger number.
The Honeywell TP70WKN is a 50-pint that still wears a 70-pint name. hOmeLabs HME1003 "120 pints at 95°F / 90% RH" is a saturation claim. Midea still prints "70 pint 2012 DOE" next to the Cube 50's real 50-pint rating — same machine, old yardstick. The Cube 20's 1,500 sq ft line and Eva-Dry's cubic-foot cards are closed-space claims, not basement coverage.
50 DOE pints (basement): Cube 50, FHDD5034W1, HME1003, Gallery FGAC5044W1, TP70WKN, Hisense DH5026KP1G.
20 DOE pints (bedroom): Cube 20.
70 pints, no bucket (crawl / whole-home): AprilAire E070.
Ounces (RV / closet / safe): EDV-1100, E-333.
Noise is the other room-size tell. A 50-pint on high is a basement appliance — Cube published ~66.4 dB above the panel; Honeywell is louder in some bench mics despite moving less air. The Cube 20's official ~45 dBA is why it exists. The EDV-1100's ~33 dB is quiet because it barely moves water.
Then shop the list
Architecture first. Then DOE pints for an honest room. Then whether the drain is downhill, uphill, or a hose in a crawl. Energy Star and the app are last.

A damp or wet basement is a 50-pint compressor: Cube 50, FHDD5034W1, HME1003, Gallery FGAC5044W1, Honeywell TP70WKN, or Hisense DH5026KP1G. A closed bedroom or office is a 20-pint compressor: the Cube 20-Pint (~45 dBA). A sealed crawl or ducted basement is the AprilAire E070 (70 pints, hose drain, no bucket). Hisense DH5026KP1G posts the highest certified IEF we checked in that portable cluster (2.01) plus a 2-year warranty. hOmeLabs is 1.90; the FHDD is 1.80; AprilAire E070 is 2.1 as a whole-home unit. Thermoelectric and silica are not in that race — 22 W is a different machine. Wi-Fi does not pull pints. Cube 50, Cube 20, FHDD, Gallery, and the current HME1003 all have an app. Buy a dashboard only if you will open it. Honeywell's extra is the Mirage front RH display, not a login. Skip any pitch that leads with an ionizer.
